Canals and bridges

Tjuvholmen is divided into three by canals and linked by bridges and jetties. Follow the harbour promenade in 3D, from Aker Brygge all the way out to the sea bath.

Three parts, separated by canals

Tjuvholmen consists of three parts separated by canals, to make the most of the closeness to the water. Odden is joined to the mainland and lies nearest Aker Brygge. Holmen lies to the south and has the most homes. Skjæret lies to the east, with the sculpture park and Astrup Fearnley Museet.

The old Tjuvholmen pier is cut through by a canal with a bridge across it, Kanalbroen. The street Landgangen runs along the south side of the canal.

The bridges

In the model you can follow the bridges from one part to the next. The bridge to Odden has a timber deck, and here a mother is pushing a pram across. By The Thief, a footbridge crosses the canal, a lovely sight in the evening light.

By the museum, the canal is crossed by footbridges with timber decks, and a footbridge links the museum's two buildings. The museum bridge offers views of the harbour and the surroundings.

A bridge is planned from Holmen across to Filipstad.

Jetties and the harbour promenade

Along the canals and out towards the fjord are jetties and floating jetties. In the model, boats lie moored in the marina, and in the evening the light from the windows is reflected in the water.

At the far end of Holmen lies Dyna brygge, with a promenade, and at the very end the street and square Fru Kroghs brygge. Several buildings stand partly in the sea: Kavringen brygge 3 stands at the tip of the pier, and the balconies of Ovalbygget in Kanalen extend 7 metres out over the water.

The harbour promenade runs through Tjuvholmen and links the area with Aker Brygge and the rest of Oslo's waterfront. The plan for the promenade was adopted in 2008.

Streets and squares are designated for public use, and the parking is under the sea. That is why you can walk along the water without any traffic.

  • The streets have names such as Landgangen, Sjøgangen, Kobbernaglen and Dyna brygge. The names were approved by the Frogner district committee.
  • Tjuvholmen consists of one area joined to the mainland and two islands. Odden is joined to the mainland, while Holmen and Skjæret are separated from it by canals.
  • The sea bath on the southern tip of Holmen has jetties with a diving board, and the beach lies by the canal between Skjæret and Holmen.
  • The Royal Yacht “Norge” has a permanent berth at Filipstad, just off Salmakersvenn at the far end of Tjuvholmen.
